For
each of the pieces in her Imaginary Science series, Lucy H. G. studies
various aspects of everyday life through the lens of science. The collection
of works presents mundane objects or routines infused with animated scientific
systems. The artist’s subjects range from the anatomy of a desk lamp
to the flight of ceiling fans. Through models of the physics of flight, the
circulatory system and other phenomena, a new science takes shape.
“Throughout
my work I explore an array of scientific phenomena, from time to the molecular
structure of water to the physics of flight. Yet mundane rituals, like eating
dinner or bathing, become essential parts of my collection of physics. I take
passing conversations and highlight them as pivotal moments of history. In
the end, mine is the science of the ordinary, which, up close, appears extraordinary.”
