Beneath
the North Sea reveals an ever-altering picture of place, morphing just
as a nation’s identity and borders move through time and in space. As
Norway celebrates the centennial of disunion from Sweden, the transience of
place can be viewed within a global context. The video components of the installation
include Norwegians singing centuries-old Swedish ballads, a reminder of shifting
identities. Within slowly morphing shapes like bubbles float images: a baby
rocking on the sea of a tabletop covered in snow reveals location as a dream
state, ever-changing. Portraits of Swedish royalty float beside the gallery’s
viewers. Immersed within the contours of liquid lies a watery sense of place.
